FOOD FOR THOUGHT BLOG | I Saw Sparkles in your Eyes BY PAT TSANG

Every time when it comes to the question of “what is your dream? ”, even a quiet person would become chatty, and you can see sparkles in his eyes when he is talking about it. This simple question is like a key, a key to open people’s hearts.

Such a topic was being discussed in our recent Heart & Parcel bloggers’ meeting as well.  One of the members shared her dream of writing an illustrated book, and she hoped the message of the book would make a better world.   Her frankness and boldness of sharing encouraged us to talk about our dreams.  The discussion became animated as if the time was too short for everyone to complete their stories.

I wanted to be a teacher when I was a kid, but I gave it up only a few years later.  I cannot even remember the reason why.  After I entered secondary school, I felt like writing.  I started to write some poems and short articles to express my thoughts.  I wrote them down in a fancy notebook, and shared them with a few close classmates.  They would copy those words they liked in their notebooks.  While I thought my words were not beautiful enough for copying, I only thought the reason they liked it was just because “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.  In fact, I was nothing special but liked many other sentimental adolescents who wanted to speak up and be listened to.  I had been dreaming of being a writer in those years, though.  “If I had gone to the University and studied Chinese Language, my dream could have come true,”  I thought naively.

Now I can tell you that I have not gone to University… for some reasons.  I have no complaints because things could go anyway as they like.   I went with the flow and started working right after finishing Grade 11. Working life was not that challenging to me fortunately, and I got along with it smoothly.  I thought working was easier when there was no more homework nor examinations so that I was free to watch TV and play as much as I liked.  More importantly, I had money to spend.  Such a life is a dream, isn’t it?  Why can’t I spoil myself to live like a robot without feeling; without thinking; without dreaming.  When the road ahead is full of potholes,  to keep going would only hurt my car! Why not change to another route?!

This is my story, which I had already forgotten about until I picked up a pen to write it now.  What is your dream?  No matter whether they are small or big; for your own good or benefit to others; whether they have come true or been buried.  Dreams are dreams, they are worth anyone’s respect and chasing after.  For the world is full of sufferings, and dreams bring us hopes.  Let’s keep dreaming.

Special thanks to Esther, who brought up this topic, and the rest of the meeting members who made the discussion animating and inspiring.
